One of the initial and most prominent observations we made upon seeing our new home was the immediate need for an updated house number display. The existing style, featuring what we later learned was a Kokopelli design, simply didn’t align with our aesthetic preferences. It felt outdated and frankly, a little out of place for the overall look we envisioned for our home’s exterior.
Enhancing Curb Appeal: The Journey to Modern House Numbers
Updating your house numbers is a surprisingly impactful way to boost your home’s curb appeal. It’s often one of the first elements visitors, delivery drivers, and emergency services notice. Beyond aesthetics, clear and legible house numbers are crucial for safety and convenience. Our goal was to replace the old, unappealing numbers with something modern, elegant, and perfectly integrated into our home’s exterior.
The Initial Plan: A Seemingly Simple DIY House Number Kit
With a long list of renovation projects already underway, we were hoping for a quick and straightforward solution for our house numbers. We’d been up to our eyeballs in various tasks, leaving us little time or energy to embark on another elaborate DIY creation from scratch. Opting for efficiency, we decided to purchase a ready-made kit. We found an attractive option at Home Depot for approximately $30, which seemed like a budget-friendly and hassle-free choice.
The kit included a sleek, modern plaque, individual stick-on numbers, and a handy template designed to ensure perfect alignment. We envisioned a simple “peel, stick, and mount” process, believing this particular project would be an easy win in our ongoing home improvement marathon. We thought, “Easy peasy, right?”
The Unexpected Hurdle: Angled Siding Strikes Again
WRONG. As often happens with home projects, what appears simple on the surface can quickly reveal hidden complexities. Our plan hit an immediate snag when we attempted to mount the new plaque directly onto our home’s siding. The design of our exterior features prominent angled siding, a common architectural element that, while visually interesting, presented an unforeseen challenge for our flat plaque.
When held against the slanted surface, the new house number plaque didn’t sit flush. Instead, it tilted awkwardly, creating a visually jarring and unstable appearance. The sleek, modern design we had envisioned now looked incredibly “dumb” and out of place. This unexpected issue meant our “easy” project would require more thought and effort than initially anticipated. It was a classic example of how even minor home updates can sometimes demand creative problem-solving. We realized that simply screwing the plaque in place would either leave it crooked or create unsightly gaps, neither of which was an acceptable outcome for our desired aesthetic.
Crafting a Custom Solution for Perfect Alignment
Recognizing that a direct mount wouldn’t work, we began brainstorming alternative solutions. Our primary goal was to ensure the plaque sat perfectly straight and flush against the angled siding, maintaining a clean and professional look. This meant we needed to create an intermediary piece that could bridge the gap and correct the angle.
The Ingenious Wood Block Fix
My husband, always the practical problem-solver, came up with an elegant and effective solution. He decided to cut a piece of wood that precisely matched the angle of our siding. This custom-cut wood block would serve as a shim, creating a level surface for the house number plaque to be mounted upon. The beauty of this approach was its simplicity and effectiveness, transforming an architectural challenge into an opportunity for a custom-fit solution.
To execute this, he carefully measured the angle of the siding, a crucial step to ensure the final result would be perfectly level. Using a miter saw, he cut a piece of wood to the exact specifications, creating a wedge-shaped block. This block would essentially “fill” the void created by the siding’s angle, allowing the plaque to sit flat and straight. It was a testament to the power of basic carpentry skills in overcoming unexpected DIY hurdles.
Adding the Finishing Touches: Durability and Style
Once the custom wood piece was cut, the next step was to integrate it seamlessly with the existing house number plaque and the home’s exterior. Aesthetics and durability were key considerations. To ensure the wood block not only looked good but also stood up to the elements, it needed a protective and decorative finish.
I took on the task of spraying the wood block with oil-rubbed bronze spray paint. This choice was deliberate: the rich, dark metallic finish not only offered excellent weather protection but also complemented the modern aesthetic of the house number plaque and other existing exterior fixtures. The painting process involved cleaning the wood, applying several thin, even coats of spray paint, and allowing adequate drying time between each coat to achieve a smooth, durable finish. This attention to detail ensured that the custom piece didn’t look like an add-on but an integral part of the overall design.
With the paint dry, we then mounted the two pieces together: the plaque securely affixed to the newly painted angled wood block. This assembly created a single, cohesive unit ready for installation. We used appropriate screws to ensure a strong and lasting bond between the plaque and the wood, mindful that this entire assembly would be exposed to outdoor conditions.
The Grand Reveal: A Modern and Level Display
The final installation was incredibly satisfying. With the custom-angled wood block now serving as a stable and level base, the house number plaque sat perfectly straight against the siding. The “weirdness” caused by the slanted exterior was completely gone, replaced by a clean, modern, and perfectly aligned display. The solution was effective, visually pleasing, and exactly what we had hoped for in terms of updating our home’s first impression.
The contrast with the old Kokopelli-style numbers was striking. Our new house numbers offered a contemporary look that significantly elevated the overall curb appeal. It was a clear demonstration that sometimes, the most elegant solutions are born from unexpected challenges and a willingness to adapt. The project, though slightly more involved than originally planned, yielded a result far superior to what a direct, crooked installation would have ever achieved.
Beyond House Numbers: A Holistic Approach to Exterior Enhancement
While the house numbers project was a success, the journey to a fully transformed front porch and exterior is an ongoing one. The finishing touches for the house numbers include touching up the silver screws with a bit of oil-rubbed bronze paint to perfectly blend them into the plaque and wood block – a small detail that often makes a big difference in the overall polished look. This final touch, though sometimes procrastinated, is essential for a truly complete and professional finish.
Our commitment to enhancing our home’s curb appeal extends far beyond just the numbers. We’ve already made significant progress in other areas, notably an update to the exterior lighting. Upgrading light fixtures is another relatively simple yet highly effective way to modernize a home’s façade and improve both aesthetics and nighttime visibility.
Furthermore, we’ve been diligently working on the front landscaping, which plays a pivotal role in creating a welcoming and visually appealing entrance. Thoughtful landscaping, from vibrant flowerbeds to well-maintained shrubs and pathways, frames the home beautifully and enhances its natural charm.
Looking ahead, we have even bigger plans for our front porch. The existing storm door, with its “scrolly-metal shenanigans,” is next on the list for a major update. We envision a modern storm door that complements our home’s new aesthetic, moving away from outdated designs. Additionally, painting the front door a fun, bold color is a project we’re excited about. A fresh coat of paint can dramatically change the personality of a home’s entrance, making it more inviting and expressive. Simultaneously, repainting the brass kick plate will ensure all elements of the front door are cohesive and stylish.
Once these final projects are complete – the storm door replacement, the front door paint, and the kick plate update – we’ll finally be able to declare our front porch makeover “all done!” It’s a journey of continuous improvement, where each small project contributes to a larger vision of a beautiful, welcoming, and personalized home exterior. These exterior updates not only enhance the daily enjoyment of our home but also contribute significantly to its overall market value and desirability.
