The holiday season is a magical time of year, filled with warmth, joy, and the spirit of giving. For many, finding that perfect, unique gift for loved ones can be both a delightful challenge and a rewarding experience. This year, I decided to revisit a cherished tradition that brought so much cheer last year: a “Twelve Days of Christmas” gift package. Why fix what isn’t broken, right? It’s a wonderful way to extend the festive spirit beyond just Christmas Day, making the anticipation and celebration last even longer.

If you’re looking for the original inspiration and more background on this heartwarming tradition, you can find it by following this link: The Original Post.

Last year, I curated a delightful collection of treats, each thoughtfully paired with a short, meaningful Christmas story. The idea is to present a small gift for twelve consecutive days, each day revealing a new story and a complementary sweet treat. It’s an immersive and interactive gift that builds excitement daily, truly embodying the essence of the holiday season. However, I encountered a few hurdles this year in sourcing some of the exact candies I used previously. This got me thinking: wouldn’t it be incredibly helpful to offer a variety of alternative ideas for each story? This way, if you find yourself in a similar predicament or simply want more options, you’ll have a treasure trove of suggestions at your fingertips.

This guide aims to make your “Twelve Days of Christmas” gifting experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible. We’ll dive into each of the twelve stories, offering multiple candy suggestions that perfectly capture the theme. Whether you’re a seasoned DIY gift-giver or new to this enchanting tradition, you’ll find inspiration and practical tips to create a memorable and heartfelt gift for your family or friends.

Twelve Days of Christmas

Curating Your “Twelve Days of Christmas” Sweet Treats

The beauty of this gift lies in its personal touch and the thoughtfulness behind each selection. Each story carries a unique message, often touching on themes of love, generosity, faith, and the true meaning of Christmas. Pairing these narratives with a delightful candy creates a multisensory experience that recipients are sure to cherish. Here are some expanded ideas for each of the twelve days, complete with diverse candy choices to suit various tastes and availability:

Day 1: A Christmas Family
This story often emphasizes the warmth and unity of family. For this day, a timeless and universally loved treat is perfect.
Candy Ideas: A red envelope filled with classic chocolate coins is an excellent choice, symbolizing prosperity and the preciousness of family bonds. Alternatively, consider a small bag of gourmet chocolates or a selection of foil-wrapped chocolate bells, echoing the joyous sounds of the season and the preciousness of family gatherings. You could also opt for a family-sized candy bar, like a large milk chocolate bar, to share and enjoy together, truly encapsulating the “family” theme.

Day 2: Rudolph—That Amazing Reindeer
Rudolph’s story is a heartwarming tale of acceptance, bravery, and shining bright despite differences.
Candy Ideas: Reindeer-themed treats are a must here! Reindeer marshmallows, often found in festive shapes, are a charming option. “Pooping reindeer” candies (chocolate drops with an animal dispenser) offer a humorous twist. Peep reindeer, with their distinct marshmallow texture, are another delightful choice. For a truly unique and creative idea, inspired by Betty Crocker Wannabe, you can transform IBC root beer bottles into reindeer! Simply add googly eyes and pipe cleaners for antlers. I found that a 2-liter bottle works wonderfully for larger families, ensuring everyone gets a taste, especially since IBC often comes in six-packs, which might not be enough for seven family members. Other options include chocolate reindeer figures, small bags of red-nosed candies (like cherry sours or gumdrops), or even caramel-filled chocolate reindeer.

Day 3: An Older Brother’s Gift
This story typically highlights themes of sibling love, protection, and the simple yet profound gifts exchanged within a family.
Candy Ideas: A Lifesavers candy book is an iconic and fitting choice. The “lifesaver” theme subtly connects to the protective nature of an older sibling, while the book format suggests wisdom and guidance. Another excellent idea could be a variety pack of individually wrapped hard candies, perhaps in different flavors, symbolizing the diverse personality of a sibling and the different “flavors” they bring to family life. You could also consider a “treasure chest” of smaller, varied candies, implying the hidden gems of kindness and support from a brother.

Day 4: The Other Wise Man
This narrative often tells of a journey of selflessness, sacrifice, and the true meaning of giving beyond material wealth.
Candy Ideas: Ring Pop Jewels are a playful and sparkling choice, representing the precious jewels and gifts mentioned in the story of the wise men. Candy necklaces, with their colorful “beads,” also work wonderfully, evoking a similar sense of adornment and value. For a more sophisticated touch, consider individually wrapped chocolate truffles, symbolizing the precious and rich gifts of the Magi. Alternatively, small bags of rock candy or edible sugar crystals could mimic rare gems, connecting to the journey and search for something truly valuable.

Day 5: Christmas Day In The Morning
This story often focuses on the simple joys and routines of Christmas morning, perhaps involving farm life or humble beginnings.
Candy Ideas: Cow tales, with their distinctive chewy texture and caramel flavor, are a perfect fit, especially if the story involves milking cows or farm animals. These can sometimes be tricky to find, but are worth the search! Milky Ways are an excellent alternative, directly linking to the “milking the cow” theme. I’ve also seen cow-shaped farm animal bubble tape, which adds a fun, interactive element for younger recipients. Other creative options could include caramel squares, white chocolate pretzels (resembling milk), or even small chocolate cows, emphasizing the pastoral setting often associated with Christmas morning stories.

Day 6: In Shepherd’s Field
This story transports us to the peaceful fields where shepherds watched their flocks, a poignant scene from the Nativity.
Candy Ideas: To represent the sheep, “pooping sheep” candies (similar to the reindeer idea) are a whimsical choice. Farm animal bubble tape, specifically the sheep-shaped ones, also fit the theme perfectly. Another idea is fluffy marshmallow twists or white chocolate-covered pretzels, which can evoke the wool of sheep. Small bags of “cotton candy” (often called “fairy floss”) could also be a delightful and thematic representation of soft sheep’s wool in the fields under the starry sky.

Day 7: The Christmas Orange
The Christmas orange is a classic symbol, often representing the preciousness of simple gifts, the warmth of the sun, and sometimes even the world itself.
Candy Ideas: A chocolate orange, which segments into delicious slices, is the quintessential choice for this day. Its presentation and flavor are perfectly aligned with the story’s theme. Gummy orange slices offer a brighter, tangier alternative, still capturing the essence of the fruit. For a different twist, consider orange-flavored hard candies, or even small bags of orange jelly beans. The key is to find something that clearly evokes the vibrant color and flavor of an orange, a simple yet profound gift in many Christmas tales.

Day 8: A Christmas Gift For Jesus
This story typically explores the concept of giving meaningful, non-material gifts to Jesus, such as kindness, love, and service.
Candy Ideas: Candy dollars are a popular and straightforward choice, representing the idea of giving our “treasures” or “talents.” This year, I discovered mints at Dollar Tree that are printed to resemble money, offering a unique twist. Chocolate dollar bars are widely available and always a hit. I even spotted a massive chocolate dollar at Walgreens, measuring about 10″x12″ – imagine the delight of receiving that! Other ideas include edible gold coins (similar to the Day 1 suggestion, but with a different emphasis on “treasure”), or even small bags of gold-foiled candies, symbolizing precious offerings.

Day 9: Why Christmas Trees Aren’t Perfect
This tale often celebrates imperfections, reminding us that true beauty lies in uniqueness and meaning, not flawless symmetry.
Candy Ideas: Peep Christmas trees are a festive and colorful choice, reflecting the shape of a tree. Reese’s Peanut Butter Trees are a delicious and widely available option, directly tying into the tree theme. Little Debbie Tree Cakes are another classic holiday treat that fits perfectly. For more variety, consider tree-shaped gingerbread cookies, green gummy trees, or even small bags of green and red M&Ms, evoking Christmas ornaments on a tree, imperfect yet beautiful.

Day 10: Christmas On The Rhine
This story might evoke images of European Christmas markets, traditional baking, and the festive spirit of gingerbread.
Candy Ideas: Little Debbie Gingerbread Men are an excellent and readily available option, perfectly capturing the spirit of gingerbread and European Christmas traditions. You could also include homemade gingerbread cookies, spiced gumdrops, or even small bags of ginger snaps. Chocolate-covered pretzels decorated with white icing to resemble snowflakes could also evoke a snowy European Christmas scene, adding another layer to the “Rhine” theme.

Day 11: A Brother Like That
Similar to Day 3, this story likely focuses on sibling relationships, perhaps highlighting friendly competition, adventure, or mutual support.
Candy Ideas: Race car candies are a fantastic choice, especially if the story involves themes of speed, adventure, or playful rivalry between siblings. This was one candy I found particularly challenging to source this year, so don’t be afraid to get creative with alternatives. I ultimately opted for “Cars” fruit snacks, which were a hit and easily found on sale. Other ideas include small toy cars with a candy attached, car-shaped gummies, or even themed chocolate bars that tie into speed or adventure. Consider anything that suggests movement, energy, or friendly competition.

Day 12: The Legend of the Candy Cane
This beloved legend tells the story of the candy cane’s symbolism, from its “J” shape for Jesus to its white and red stripes representing purity and sacrifice.
Candy Ideas: This one is a no-brainer! Candy canes, in all their festive glory, are the absolute perfect choice. You simply cannot go wrong with this classic. You’ll find them everywhere during the holiday season, from traditional peppermint to a myriad of other flavors and sizes. Consider a mix of sizes or even chocolate-filled candy canes for an extra special treat. This is one candy you are guaranteed to find with ease!

Where to Source Your Sweet Treasures

Finding the right candies can sometimes be a scavenger hunt, but with a little planning, it’s part of the fun! Here’s a list of stores where I successfully found my candy treasures, along with some general tips:

  • Smith’s: Often a great place for branded items and snacks, I found the “Cars” fruit snacks here, especially when they were on sale. Grocery stores are fantastic for seasonal deals.
  • Dollar Tree: A goldmine for budget-friendly and unique finds! This is where I picked up dollar mints, cow tales (a great score!), ring pops, chocolate bells, and chocolate coins. Dollar stores are surprisingly good for novelty candies and bulk items.
  • Wal-Mart: A reliable superstore for holiday staples. Here, I stocked up on candy canes, chocolate oranges, root beer (for the Rudolph idea), gingerbread men, and Peep trees. Large retailers will have a wide selection of seasonal treats.
  • Michael’s: Surprisingly, craft stores like Michael’s can carry specialty candies, especially novelty items for holiday gift-making. This is where I found the “pooping sheep” candies. Always check the seasonal aisles in craft stores!

Pro Tip: Keep an eye out for seasonal aisles in all stores, from grocery chains to drugstores (like Walgreens or CVS) and even online retailers. Holiday-themed candies often appear months in advance, so early shopping can help you secure specific items and avoid last-minute stress.

An Extra Story and Treat Idea: The Legend of the First Christmas Bell

In case you find yourself with an extra day, or perhaps one of the stories doesn’t quite resonate, here’s a beautiful bonus story and a perfectly paired treat:

The Legend of the First Christmas Bell
Candy Idea: Chocolate bell candies

The star shone brightly over Bethlehem, guiding the shepherds from the fields and the wise men from far-off lands to the stable of the newborn King. But, in the city, a small boy, blind and alone, wandered aimlessly through the streets, his heart filled with a silent hope that someone would lead him to the Christ Child. His journey was one of darkness and uncertainty, yet his spirit yearned for the light of the newborn savior.

Suddenly, through the still, cool night air, a faint, delicate tinkle reached his ears – the sound of a distant bell. It was soft, almost imperceptible, but it held a magnetic pull for the lost boy. He turned, orienting himself by the ethereal sound, and began to walk in its direction. Gradually, as he persevered, its music became louder, clearer, and more resonant, filling the quiet night with a gentle melody. Along with the increasing chime, he began to hear excited voices, a murmur of awe and wonder.

As he approached the stable, guided by the symphony of the bell and the hushed excitement of the crowd, a kind shepherd noticed the boy’s uncertain steps. Taking his small hand, the shepherd gently led him to the manger where the Holy Family rested. There, amidst the soft glow and humble setting, the shepherd tenderly explained that the bell the boy had heard hung around the neck of a gentle cow, watching faithfully over the sleeping Child, a silent guardian in the sacred scene.

The little boy knelt silently in prayer, overwhelmed with gratitude and a profound sense of peace. He thanked God for the Baby Jesus, for the miracle of His birth, and for the incredible journey that had led him there. And, in his innocent heart, he didn’t forget a special prayer for the humble animal that, through its simple bell, had guided him out of his literal and figurative darkness and into the presence of light. Since that first sacred Christmas night, bells have joyfully rung out the glad tidings of the Birth of Christ, echoing the joy and wonder, and calling people to worship and prayer, a timeless symbol of guidance and celebration.
