Gather Your Supplies: Materials Needed

Before we begin crafting our adorable turkey feather pens and their charming holder, let’s ensure you have all the necessary materials laid out. Good preparation makes for a smooth and enjoyable crafting experience.

Materials needed for the Thanksgiving turkey feather pen craft
All the crafting essentials for your turkey feather pen project.
  • Colored Duck Tape: This is the star of our feather creation! I recommend using autumnal shades like red, terracotta, brown, and gold to truly capture the essence of fall and Thanksgiving. Duck Tape is fantastic for this project because of its durability and wide range of vibrant colors.
  • Pencils or Pens: Choose new pencils or pens that have a smooth barrel for easy tape application. Standard yellow pencils work great, but you can also use pens for a different feel.
  • Sharp Scissors: Essential for clean cuts, especially when shaping the feather edges. Craft scissors or fabric scissors work best.
  • Small Glass Jar or Votive: This will serve as the turkey’s body and holder for the pens. A votive candle holder or a small jam jar is perfect. Ensure it’s sturdy enough to hold several pens without tipping.
  • Colored Cardstock: You’ll need red, yellow, brown, and black cardstock to create the turkey’s body, head, wattle, and beak. These colors are classic for Thanksgiving turkeys.
  • Paper Glue and/or Hot Glue Gun with Glue Sticks: Paper glue is good for the cardstock elements, while a hot glue gun provides a stronger, quicker bond for attaching the turkey to the glass jar. Always exercise caution when using a hot glue gun.
  • Thankful Printable: A special printable designed to encourage gratitude. You can download this at the bottom of this post to complete your Thanksgiving table setup.

Step-by-Step Instructions: Crafting Your Turkey Feather Pens

Now that you have all your materials ready, let’s get down to the fun part: making these festive turkey feather pens and their charming turkey holder. Follow these steps carefully, and you’ll have a delightful Thanksgiving craft in no time!

Step-by-step guide to making duck tape feather pencils
Visual guide for crafting your Duck Tape feather pens.

Step 1: Prepare Your Duck Tape Strip
Begin by cutting a strip of your chosen Colored Duck Tape. The ideal length is between 12 to 15 inches. This length provides enough material to create a sizable feather that will be visually appealing without being overly bulky. Once cut, carefully lay the strip sticky-side-up onto a clean, flat work surface. The stickiness of the tape can be tricky, so take your time to lay it out smoothly. Next, position one of your pencils or pens onto the center of the tape. Make sure that the bottom three to four inches of the pencil extend past the edge of the tape. This exposed section will be the functional part of your pen, allowing for comfortable writing. Refer to the first image in the photo above for the correct placement.

Step 2: Fold the Duck Tape
With the pencil securely in place, carefully fold one half of the Duck Tape over onto itself, aiming to align the outer edges precisely. The goal here is to encapsulate the top portion of the pencil and create a double-sided tape strip that will form the feather. Take your time with this step to minimize wrinkles and ensure the tape adheres smoothly to itself, avoiding sticking to the pencil too much, allowing it to be easily removed if needed.

Step 3: Smooth and Seal the Tape
Once folded, press the two tape halves together firmly. Start pressing from the center, right where the pencil is, and gradually work your way outwards towards the edges. This technique helps to push out any trapped air, preventing unsightly bubbles and ensuring a strong bond between the tape layers. While striving for a perfectly smooth finish is ideal, don’t worry if you get a few small bubbles or minor folds; they often add to the handmade charm and won’t detract from the overall look of your feather.

Step 4: Shape Your Feather
Now for the artistic part! Using your sharp scissors, begin to cut the tip of the Duck Tape strip into a distinct, pointy feather shape. Think of a natural bird feather – tapered at the top. Next, round off the bottom edges of the tape strip, giving it a more organic and less rigid appearance. To create the characteristic feathery texture, snip small, shallow slits all the way down both long edges of the tape. These snips should be relatively close together and angled slightly inward to mimic the barbs of a real feather. For an even more realistic look, I like to go back and add a few random snips and slight curves along the straight sides. This roughens up the edges, breaking the uniformity and making your Duck Tape feather look wonderfully authentic. Experiment with different depths and angles for your snips to achieve various feather styles.

Step 5: Create Your Turkey Body
With your feather pens underway, it’s time to craft the adorable turkey body that will serve as their holder. Grab your colored cardstock in shades of brown, red, yellow, and black. You can freehand draw a turkey body and head, or for more precision, use a cutting machine like a Silhouette or Cricut. There are many free turkey templates and clipart available online if you prefer to print and cut. Cut out a brown oval or pear shape for the body, a smaller brown circle for the head, a red wattle, a yellow or orange beak, and two small black circles for the eyes. Don’t forget a cute little tuft of hair or a tiny pilgrim hat if you’re feeling extra creative! This is where you can truly personalize your turkey’s character.

Step 6: Assemble Your Turkey Pen Holder
Finally, it’s time to bring your turkey to life! Carefully glue the cardstock turkey pieces together, then attach the completed turkey body to your small glass jar or votive. Use a strong paper glue or, for a quicker and more secure bond, a hot glue gun. Position the turkey on the front of the jar so it faces outwards, proudly showcasing its face. It’s crucial to ensure that the jar you’ve chosen is the appropriate size for holding the feather pens you’ve just created. If the jar is too wide, your beautiful feathers might sink too low and be obscured from view, losing their visual impact. Conversely, if the jar is too small, the pens might tip over or fall out, defeating the purpose of a holder. Test the fit before the glue fully sets to ensure your turkey is both adorable and functional!

Customizing and Displaying Your Thanksgiving Craft

Now isn’t this little jar of pencils the most festive, Thanksgiving-ready writing utensil display you have ever seen?! Ha ha ha. It’s quirky, silly, and so much fun. My kids are absolutely going to adore it, and I bet yours will too!

Creative Variations & Personalization:

  • Feather Colors: Don’t limit yourself to traditional autumnal hues! Try metallic Duck Tape for a touch of shimmer, or even patterned tape for unique feathers.
  • Turkey Embellishments: Add googly eyes to your cardstock turkey for extra whimsy, or attach small bows, glitter, or tiny autumn leaves for added texture.
  • Holder Alternatives: Instead of a glass jar, consider using a small decorative planter, a tin can wrapped in burlap, or even a mini pumpkin (hollowed out and weighted) as your turkey’s body.
  • Different Writing Tools: While pencils are great, you can also adapt this craft for larger pens, markers, or even chopsticks for a purely decorative display.

Integrating into Your Thanksgiving Decor:

These turkey feather pens are more than just a craft; they are a conversation starter and a functional piece of decor. Place the turkey holder, brimming with its colorful feather pens, at the center of your dining table, perhaps on a bed of fall leaves or nestled amongst small pumpkins. You can also set one at each place setting, accompanied by a small card for guests to write down their blessings.

The Gratitude Activity: A Heartfelt Tradition

The true magic of these feather pens unfolds when they are used for their intended purpose: to capture moments of gratitude. Thanksgiving is a prime time to reflect on the blessings in our lives. By providing each guest with a feather pen and a “thankful for” card, you’re creating an opportunity for meaningful interaction and reflection.

How to Facilitate:

  1. Place a feather pen and a blank gratitude card (like our printable!) at each guest’s place setting.
  2. Before dinner, during dessert, or at any suitable moment, invite everyone to take a moment to write down one or more things they are truly thankful for.
  3. Optionally, go around the table and have each person share what they wrote. This can lead to heartwarming discussions and deepen connections.
  4. Collect the cards and read them aloud, or save them as a precious keepsake to look back on in future years.

This simple activity encourages mindfulness and appreciation, making your Thanksgiving celebration even more special and memorable.
